In January 1966, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the school was officially founded and named as "Private Tung Fang Junior College of Industry and Arts." Mr.Tsai, Tian-Lai was invited to be the first Board Chairman, and Dr.Hsu, Kuo Hsiung, founder of the school, to be the first President. The school was then allowed to recruit five year program students for the spring semester.
In July 1969, the school was approved by the Ministry to be renamed as "Tung Fang Junior College of Industry".
In August 1972, to meet with the government policy of Reeducation for the Youth, the school was approved to recruit 2-year-Associate-Degree students in the evening.
In December 1980, Mr. Tsai, Mao-Sheng was nominated and later elected as the new Board Chairman after the first Board Chairman Mr. Tsai, Tian-Lai had passed away.
In August 1989, two year junior college program was approved to be established in the day time.
In October 1990, the school was again approved by the Ministry of Education to change its name as "Tung Fang Junior College of Industry and Commerce."
In august 1996, continuing education for junior college students was approved to be established. At the same time the Extension Education Center was founded for promoting adult education.
In August 1999, the school was taken over by the Ministry of Education and an Administrative Committee formed to substitute the authority of the Board. Professor Hsu, Sheg-Hsiung of National Taiwan Technology University was invited to substitute for the President. The 10th Board of Directors was then authorized to stop its operation.
In August 2000, the 11th public Board of Directors was formed, naming Dr. Ou, His-Chi, who had worked as the President of the National Institute of Marine Technology, as the 3rd Board Chairman.
In August 2001, the 11th Board of Directors employed Academic Dean of the Southern Taiwan University of Technology Professor Chiu, Ming-Yuan as the 2nd President of the school.
In August 2002, Ministry of Education approved the school to be upgraded as "Tung Fang Institute of Technology" and at the same time the junior college division was also allowed to be retained. The Ministry also approved the school to establish university-level two-year programs for such departments as Chemical and Materials Engineering, Arts and Crafts, Electrical Engineering, and Electronics and Information Engineering. One class was allowed for each department, with a total of four classes.
In August 2003, the 12thBoard of Directors was formed, and Dr. Ou, Hsi-Chi was again chosen as the Board Chairman. For the fist time, the Department of Tourism and Leisure Management started to recruit university level students. Starting form the same academic year, the academic length of junior college programs in the evening school and weekend school was shortened from three years to two years.
In August 2004, the Ministry of Education approved the school to admit university students for the departments of Communication Arts, Applied Foreign Languages, Cosmetic Application and Management, and Food Science and Technology. The evening school was also approved to admit university students for the departments of Arts and Crafts, Tourism and Leisure Management, Applied Foreign Languages, and Communication Arts.
In October 2004, the 12th public Board of Directors invited well-known architecture Dr. William S. Pai as the 4th Board Chairman. Dr. Pai had been the national policy advisor to the President.
In August 2005, the school was approved by the Ministry of Education to admit university students for the department of Marketing and Distribution Management. Starting from the academic year 2005, the affiliated night school and weekend school began to adopt long-range learning instruction for part of the curriculum.
In January 2006, the 16th board meeting approved the school to rent Kaohsiung Kuo-Chi Vocational School of Industry and Commerce as the Kaohsiung City Area Department of Extension Education Center in order to open up city area resource.
In June 2006, the Ministry of Education approved the school to establish Continuing Education Institute at the Kaohsiung school and started to recruit two-year university students with special classes allowed to be established in Taipei.
In August 2006, the Ministry of Education approved the school to establish the Interior Design department and the stylish Merchandise Design department.
In December 2006, the 13th public Board of Director invited the founding President of National Kaohsiung Institute of Restaurant and Hospitality Dr. Fu-Teng Li as the 5th Board Chairman.
In March 2007, Digital Academic Building completed.
In October 2007, the Ministry of Education (official document number 0960161402) approved the school to admit graduate students for the Graduate Institute of Cultural and Creative Design starting 2008 academic school year.
In October 2007, the completion and opening of Shikeo Fukuda Design Museum with a collection of more than one thousand authentic artworks presented by Master Fukuda.
March 2008, the unveiling and opening of the school history museum.
In August 2008, the Ministry of Education appointed the school as the Resource Center for Campus Security Maintenance and National Defense Education in southern Taiwan.
In September 2008, the Ministry of Education (official document number 0970177781) approved the school to admit on-job graduate students for the Graduate Institute of Cultural and Creative Design starting 2009 academic school year.
In December 2008, the Ministry of Education (official document number 0970253021A) approved the school to admit 7-year program studednts for the Department of Arts and Crafts.
In January 2009, Dr. Fu-Ten Li, the 5th Board Chairman, was honorably appointed as the national policy advisor to the President of Taiwan.
